The Met Gala bears a weighty significance beyond the attires worn by the public figures in attendance. The competition among brands to secure partnerships and have their creations donned at the gala holds paramount importance. Aria Hughes hypothesises that the upper echelon of celebrities may receive numerous requests, thus warranting a closer analysis of the situation.

Known for its extravagant themes and outfits, its guest list is carefully selected by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. The process of securing high fashion looks for the Met Gala involves a collaboration between celebrity publicists, stylists, and fashion brands. Anna may also offer suggestions for celebrity-brand pairings. Aria states “This process, while appearing to be solely focused on creative expression, is in fact a nuanced political endeavor”. There are limitations that exist regarding outfit choices, with attendees required to adhere to a particular dress code. However, for the celebrities themselves, the priority lies in securing attendance to the event rather than the specific brand they will wear.

When the notorious Kardashians were rumoured that they would not be in attendance, despite having landed several brand deals in the past year. It generated a lot of social media buzz as the Met Gala is the most significant opportunity to collaborate. HFT began their theories. A discerning fashion historian and enthusiast would be able to identify specific pieces, locations, and even pets showcased on social media that alluded to the attendance of certain celebrities at the prestigious even. Finally however Kim did end up posting to Instagram a series of photos with Choupette (Karl’s infamous cat) discrediting all rumours.

Withal Kylie’s partnership with Jean Paul Gaultier was revealed shortly before the Met Gala, following two previous appearance in the JPG couture months ago. With Kylie already decked out in JPG for the event, other brands had limited opportunity to compete. Sister duo Mackenzie Grandquist and Alexandra Rose understand Kylie’s brand and always win big due to their multifaceted nature in their profession. “From trend research and networking to organisation and bookkeeping, it’s a continuous learning process” — the sisters told Vogue.

One noteworthy example is Rihanna, who’s street style was snapped in two iconic Chanel Fall/Winter 1994 ensembles on the day the theme was revealed and the evening before the gala. Such fashion nods require an astute eye for detail and a deep appreciation for fashion history and culture. Jaheel Weaver’s official pull was a Valentino haute couture silk dress that included a cape covered in 30 giant white camellia’s, inspired by the pink Valentino spring 2019 couture gown worn by Adut on the runway and Vogue Paris cover.

It’s no surprise that Rihanna donned Valentino, as her stylist Mr. Weaver is a pro at snagging cutting-edge pieces for the boundary-breaking icon. Brands are embracing inclusivity in previously uncharted territories, and Pierpaolo Piccioloi’s Valentino has been at the forefront of that movement for years.

When it comes to personal stylists for celebrities, collaborating with the fashion brands they already have partnerships with is often the simplest option, as seen with Anne Hathaway and Versace. The level of influence a celebrity has will vary based on their status as an actress or pop star, and Anna Wintour undoubtedly holds significant power in determining who wears what.
